The Petersburg Chamber of Commerce recognized six “Hometown Heroes” at its 134th annual dinner Feb. 18 at Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Those honored:

• Lt. Col. Mark E. McLain of the Fort Lee Provost Marshal’s Office. He was wounded during his service in Kabul, Afghani- stan, in August 2014.

• William “Johnny” Young, a volunteer since 1989 with the Southside Virginia Emergency Crew. He has been recognized for his actions in two recent vehicle accidents that resulted in positive outcomes.

• Detective Roosevelt Harris of the Petersburg Bureau of Police. He has won numerous awards, including the 2013 Detective of the Year.

• Lt. Dwayne Burnett of the Petersburg Sheriff’s Office. He has served in the office 19 years and is second in command of the Civil Processing Unit.

• Hallie Powers of Petersburg Public Schools. She has taught for 29 years in the city’s schools and currently teaches English at Petersburg High School.

• Marlow Jones, assistant fire marshal for the City of Peters- burg. He started a water program to help homeless people earn money and also founded a Petersburg boxing team and youth wrestling program.

“Each were honored for their selfless efforts to nurture, edu- cate, protect, fight, rescue and serve to have a major impact on the Greater Petersburg region,” according to a release from the Petersburg Chamber of Commerce.
