It’s a get-together designed to promote the positive about Richmond and its residents.

That’s the purpose of the second Richmond Community Unity Day from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 9, in Byrd Park.

Open to the public, the event is the creation of a group of friends led by photographer Connie McGowan.

Ms. McGowan created the first Unity Day last year as a counterweight to Richmond’s crime and violence.

The event drew about 1,300 people last year. She’s hoping that double the number of people will enjoy the fun this year.

“Only love will be welcome at our event. We want this to be an activity where people can just enjoy being around each other” and get away from the problems that afflict some areas of the city.

She said the event will include food, music, card games for adults, activities for children and distribution of information on health and wellness.
