Hampton University’s Najee Garvin was among the brightest stars in the inaugural HBCU All-Star Game held last Sunday at Lakefront Arena in New Orleans.

The inaugural game matching the elite talent from HBCUs was part of the NCAA Final Four festivities. It was televised live on CBS.

The 6-foot-8 Garvin scored 12 points to help Team McLendon to a 79-75 win over Team Gaines.

Team McLendon, named after iconic Coach John McLendon, consisted mostly of players from the MEAC and SIAC and was coached by Norfolk State Coach Robert Jones.

Hampton, now affiliated with the Colonial Athletic Association, is a former MEAC member.

Team Gaines, named after Clarence “Big House” Gaines, was made up of players from the CIAA and SWAC, and was coached by Alcorn State University Coach Landon Bussie.

Virginia Union University’s All-CIAA Jordan Peebles was a member of Team Gaines.

Tajh Green of Benedict College hit three of three shots from beyond the arc and was named MVP.

HBCUs have a rich history in the NBA, but there is currently only one HBCU alumnus in the NBA—former Tennessee State star Robert Covington, who plays with the Los Angeles Clippers.

The lengthy list of HBCU athletes who went on to shine in the NBA includes Earl “The Pearl” Monroe of Winston-Salem State. Monroe was in attendance at the game in New Orleans.
