Jamie Lockhart, executive director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia, said the protection of abortion rights in this state means that women who live where the procedure is banned are making their way to VLPP facilities in Richmond and Hampton Roads.

Elizabeth “Beth” Walker Mickens Randolph loved spending time with her trailblazing grandmother, Maggie L. Walker, the first black female founder and president of a bank in America. Mrs. Walker chartered the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank in Jackson Ward in 1903. “My mother grew up one block from her grandmother,” said Mrs. Randolph’s son, Johnny Mickens III, of the family’s neighboring homes in Jackson Ward.

Pilot program to provide free dinner for students
Beginning in March, Richmond Public Schools will provide free dinners to students at eights of its schools in underserved communities. Those students also will be given backpacks containing free meals to take home for the weekend and extended school breaks such as holidays and inclement weather closings.

Powhatan native Lillian L. Lambert was the first African-American woman to graduate from the Harvard University Business School. The Rev. Sylvia V. Tucker, who lives in Disputanta, was the first female African-American hospital chaplain in Virginia. The women are scheduled to share their success stories Friday, Sept. 25, with students at Chimborazo Elementary School, 3000 E. Marshall St., in the East End.

My parents raised me to be active, awake and an advocate for my community and the LGBTQ communities.
