The Lambda Lambda Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. is hosting a community book discussion on “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness” by author Michelle Alexander.

The discussion will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 31, in the Kitzinger Community Room at the James City County Library, 7770 Croaker Road in Norge.

Dr. Iyabo Osiapem, senior lecturer of Africana Studies and Linguistics at The College of William & Mary, will lead the discussion.

The book was published in 2010 and became a New York Times bestseller. It is hailed as a stunning account of the rebirth of a caste-like system in the United States, one that has resulted in millions of African- Americans — particularly young black males — locked behind bars and then relegated to a permanent second class status.

This book also addresses the history and the development of excessive policing.

The event is free and open to the public.

The Lambda Lambda Omega Chapter is collaborating to host the discussion with the York-James City-Williamsburg Branch NAACP, the Lemon Project and All Together.
