It’s not on the official schedule, but Richmond’s Battery Park will be offering its own salute to the late Arthur Ashe Jr. next weekend, it has been announced.

The Friends of Battery Park, a park support group, is planning a public celebration of the tennis great, humanitarian and hometown hero 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 22, at the North Side park at Overbook Road and Hawthorne Avenue whose tennis courts are named for Mr. Ashe.

The festive event will include tennis skill games for ages 5 and up, music and the dedication of a park tunnel that features murals created by artist Sir James Thornhill and others to tell the story of Mr. Ashe’s life and impact.

The celebration is free and open to the public.
