An estimated 150 people flowed into Monroe Park last Sunday afternoon for meals that students from a Richmond seminary offered, according to Alice M. Massie, president of the Monroe Park Conservancy, the park’s governing body.

Ms. Massie said the seminary students are just one of the organizations signing up through the Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities to offer meals on the weekend at the park to people in need.

She said her only concern is that people receiving help often are careless about the paper and plastic that comes with the food. She said she hopes those who sponsor the feeding programs “will encourage participants to pick up after themselves” to avoid littering the newly reopened park.

She said the conservancy has set up three time slots each weekend day for food distribution. Two groups can distribute food during each period: 8 to 10 a.m., 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 4 p.m.

Feeding programs can take place except when other events are taking place in the park, she said.
