Winning championships has become par for the course for the Virginia Union University golf team.

Coach E. Lee Coble’s Panthers traveled to North Carolina twice last month and both times returned to Richmond with the tallest trophy.

The VUU team, led by freshman Alkin Barkley, bested an eight-team field to capture the CIAA Mid-Major title March 18 and 19 in Fayetteville, N.C.

Barkley, a business accounting major from Johannesburg, South Africa, won medalist honors with scores of 76 and 75 for a 151 total.

Right behind Barkley at 152 were senior Allan Day from Midlothian and freshman Travon Willis from Mebane, N.C.

The Panthers were just warming up.

On March 25 and 26, VUU won the CIAA Southern Division crown in Charlotte, N.C., with Day and Willis leading the charge at 147 for 36 holes. Barkley shot 148.

The Panthers will travel to Petersburg for the CIAA Northern Division event April 8 and 9. The overall CIAA championships will be conducted April 18 and 19 in New Kent, with VUU as the host school.

VUU is building for the PGA National Minority Tournament in Port St. Lucie, Fla., on May 10 through 12.
