Joe Jackson, patriarch of the Jackson family of musical performers, suffered a stroke in Brazil on Sunday and is being treated in a Sao Paulo hospital.

Mr. Jackson was in Brazil to celebrate his 87th birthday. He was diagnosed with a stroke associated with cardiac arrhythmia and is being treated in the intensive care unit, the Albert Einstein Hospital said in an emailed statement early Monday morning.

The talent manager, who suffers from diabetes, woke up feeling dizzy and without vision on Sunday, TMZ reported. He allegedly has suffered three previous strokes, with the most recent occurring in 2012.

Mr. Jackson was estranged from his son, Michael — who became one of the world’s most successful and best-known performers — before his 2009 death. He also was estranged from his wife, Katherine, and many of his other eight children.

A representative for Mr. Jackson could not be reached for comment.

Jermaine Jackson took to Twitter to update fans on his father’s status.

“Thank you for you & prayers for our father,” he wrote. “Following a heart procedure, he remains in hospitals where he’s doing extremely well. Doctors say cardiac arrest followed a mini-stroke.

“Thankfully, brain scans show it’s not as bad as first feared. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the wonderful surgeons, doctors and nurses at the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo.”

In a statement posted Monday on his official website, Mr. Jackson thanked his supporters for their prayers and kind wishes, adding: “God willing, I should be able to make a quick recovery and travel back home soon.”
