Bethune-Cookman University is hoping a big-name former athlete will lead to big-time success in athletic competition.

Reggie Theus, 63, will serve as athletic director and head basketball coach for the MEAC school located in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The 6-foot-7 former standout at University of Nevada-Las Vegas averaged 18.5 points in an NBA career from 1978 to 1993. He was a two-time NBA All-Star in 1981 and 1983 with the Chicago Bulls.

Theus also was head coach two seasons – 2008 and 2009 – for the NBA Sacramento Kings, posting a 44-62 mark.

Theus also has served as head coach at New Mexico State University (41-23) and Cal State Northridge (53-105).

Bethune-Cookman opted out of the 2020-21 season due to the pandemic. The Wildcats were 16-18 in 2019-20 under Coach Ryan Ridder, who left Bethune-Cookman to become head coach at University of Tennessee-Martin.
