Virginia Military Institute has hired alumnus Jamaal Walton as director of intercollegiate athletics.

Walton, VMI Class of 2007, starred as a defensive cornerback for the Keydets and was named team captain as a senior. He graduated with a degree in biology. Walton succeeds Jim Miller, who recently retired.

At the Friday press conference in Lexington, Walton was introduced by Maj. Gen. Cedric T. Wins, the VMI superintendent who is the first African-American to hold the position.

Since 2021, Walton served as a senior associate director at the University of Washington. Prior to that, he worked in administration at Savannah State, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Alabama and College of Charleston, S.C.
