Grant McCray has taken the next step in his pro baseball career.

After playing the first 50 games this season with the Class AA Richmond Flying Squirrels, the swift centerfielder was promoted last week to the Class AAA Sacramento River Cats of the Pacific Coast League.

In his first three games in Sacramento, McCray was 3-for-16 at the plate with a home run and stolen base.

If successful in Sacramento, the next peg on McCray’s ladder would be to Oracle Park, home stadium for the parent San Francisco Giants.

Negro Leagues remembered

The Flying Squirrels return to The Diamond for a six-game series, June 25-30, against the Somerset Patriots, the AA affiliate of the New York Yankees.

On Saturday, June 29, the 6:05 p.m. game promotion will be Negro Leagues Heritage Night, followed by fireworks.
