Free Press staff report | 8/28/2025, 6 p.m.
AfroFest RVA returns for its sixth annual celebration of African culture on Saturday, Sept. 6, from noon to 7 p.m. at Pine Camp Cultural Arts & Community Center.
The free outdoor event is hosted by the African Community Network in partnership with the City of Richmond and the Offices of Immigrant and Refugee Engagement. Richmond’s Clovia Lawrence, also known as “Miss Community Clovia,” will serve as master of ceremonies. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
The festival features an impressive lineup including Nigerian-descended artist Nuke Major; Richmond-based West African dance troupe EziBu Muntu; Senegalese dancer Tapha Gningue; and Ghanaian performers Nee Oseye Ade Leke and SK Originale. Kingdom Music Citizens, a children’s band representing multiple African nations from Northern Virginia, will also take the stage alongside professional drummers Momar Mbaye and Bayo, who will lead interactive drum circles throughout the day. DJ Augustine Weah Doe will provide music between performances.
Families can enjoy the Kidz Zone with bounce houses, a gaming bus and cultural activities. The event includes a “Parade of Nations,” a fashion show and the announcement of AfroFest soccer tournament winners, with trophies presented by Richmond Mayor Danny Avula. A traditional libations ceremony will open the festival.
Food offerings include cuisine from world-renowned Liberian chef Mamusu of Africanne on Main, as well as Senegalese, Sudanese, Ghanaian, Trinidadian and Jamaican vendors. A curated marketplace will feature African clothing, art, accessories, crafts and personal care products. The festival will also showcase antique cars, a ladies’ motorcycle club, dancing and health screenings.
