photo  Linwood Norman, author of “When Mayor Doug Wilder Ruled Richmond: Strong-Arm Politics in Virginia’s Capital City,” will speak at the Library of Virginia on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at noon. His book examines Wilder’s achievements and controversies as Richmond’s mayor.

Norman’s book examines the tenure of L. Douglas Wilder, who became Virginia’s first elected Black governor and returned to public service in 2005 as Richmond’s first popularly elected mayor in 60 years. While Wilder won in a landslide, many voters were unprepared for his strong leadership style. Norman details Wilder’s achievements in reducing crime, cutting government spending and boosting economic vitality, while also highlighting the conflicts with City Council and the School Board.

As a former press secretary to Wilder, Norman offers a unique insider’s perspective on the mayor’s controversial decisions. The book explores the City’s transition to the “strong mayor” form of government, a chapter in Richmond’s political history that continues to spark debate more than 15 years after Wilder’s time in office. Norman, a Richmond native, will hold a book signing following the discussion.

Event registration is available on the Library of Virginia’s website at https://www.lva.virginia.gov/.
