The Richmond Flying Squirrels gave up three runs in the first inning and couldn’t recover, falling 4-2 to the Harrisburg Senators on Sunday afternoon at FNB Field.
The loss marked the end of a tough road series for the Flying Squirrels (10-23), who dropped four of six games and were outscored 42-8 over the week by the Senators (17-16).
Harrisburg jumped on Richmond starter Nick Sinacola (0-2) early with three straight singles in the opening frame. Joe Naranjo drove in the first run, followed by a sacrifice fly from Cayden Wallace and an RBI single by Carlos De La Cruz. Sinacola stranded the bases loaded to end the inning and did not allow another run over the rest of his outing.
Senators starter Hyun-il Choi (2-0) dominated the Flying Squirrels lineup, tossing seven scoreless innings with six strike-outs. It was his second scoreless start of the series after blanking Richmond over five innings on Tuesday.
Richmond broke the shutout in the eighth inning. Thomas Gavello led off with a double, advanced to third on an error and scored on Justin Wishkoski’s RBI double. Carter Howell followed with a sacrifice fly to trim the deficit to 3-2.
Jeremy De La Rosa pushed the lead back to two with an RBI triple in the bottom of the inning.
Garrett Davila pitched a clean eighth, and Michael Cuevas worked around a walk in the ninth to notch his fourth save.
Manuel Mercedes made his first relief appearance of the season for Richmond, allowing one run over four innings.
The Flying Squirrels are in the midst of a six-game homestand against the Erie SeaWolves at The Diamond.
