Indigenous culture celebrated at Kennanee Native Arts Festival

Free Press staff report | 9/11/2025, 6 p.m.

The Kennanee Native Arts Festival celebrating Indigenous culture, community and connection will be held at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden on Sunday, Sept. 14 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Presented in collaboration with the Virginia Native Arts Alliance, the festival highlights Native traditions through art, storytelling, music, food and activities. The name “Kennanee” comes from the Powhatan Algonquin word for friendship.

Attendees can view short films by Indigenous creators, watch a live Shinny game, explore crafts, participate in storytelling and seed-saving activities, and browse a marketplace featuring Native artists. Native food trucks and community partners will also be on site.

Admission is included with the Garden’s regular ticket; the festival is free for Garden members and anyone presenting tribal identification on the day of the event.
