Free Press staff report | 1/8/2026, 6 p.m.
Visitors to the Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia will get a closer look at L. Douglas Wilder’s artistic side this month as the former governor’s watercolor paintings go on display in an exhibit and auction benefiting the Wilder National Ovation Scholarship.
The event, scheduled for 3 to 6 p.m. Jan. 18, will include a silent auction of Wilder’s original works, a program highlighting his artistic journey and an opportunity to meet the inaugural 2025 recipients of the scholarship. Guests will also enjoy heavy hors d’oeuvres and guided tours of the museum.
The Wilder National Ovation Scholarship supports students pursuing degrees in public service. Scholarships are awarded to VCU undergraduates majoring in programs offered through the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs. Master’s students who earned undergraduate degrees at Virginia Union University or Howard University are also eligible.
Proceeds from the exhibit and auction will help fund the scholarships. Tickets are $95. Attire is professional, and parking is free.
