First Baptist Church of Midlothian, the oldest African American church in Chesterfield County, is preparing to celebrate its 180th anniversary under the theme “A Legacy of Grace, A Future in Faith.”

The church, founded in 1846 in the Midlothian coal mines, has served as a spiritual anchor and community pillar for nearly two centuries.

The celebration begins Jan. 31 with an anniversary brunch at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Richmond from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will feature music, reflections and fellowship as the church looks back on its history and mission. The Rev. Dr. John Kinney, pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Beaverdam and former dean of the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University, will deliver a message.

An anniversary worship service will follow at 11 a.m. Feb. 1 at First Baptist, 13800 Westfield Road. The Rev. Dr. Paul A. Coles, pastor of Sharon Baptist Church in Richmond, will serve as guest preacher.

Virginia Lt. Gov.-elect Ghazala Hashmi, local government officials and community leaders are expected to attend the worship service.
