Gov.-elect Spanberger

Abigail Spanberger will be sworn in as Virginia’s 75th governor on Saturday, making history as the first woman to hold the office. Her inauguration weekend offers several opportunities for residents to join the celebration, with a mix of ticketed and free events.

Friday, Jan. 16

Made in Virginia Market

Rapper Pusha T, one-half of the Virginia Beach hip-hop duo Clipse, is headlining the Made in Virginia Market ahead of Governor-elect Spanberger’s inauguration. The event runs from 3 to 8 p.m. at 100 N. 17th Street and will feature more than 40 businesses, artisan and food vendors from across the state. Other artists performing include Elonce, TeezySoDope and SynHERgi.

In addition to the live performances, visitors can explore booths featuring local artisans, small businesses and food vendors.

Saturday, Jan. 17

Inauguration ceremony and parade

The swearing-in ceremony begins at noon on the South Portico of the Virginia State Capitol. Tickets are required to attend inside the Capitol, but the public can watch from around Capitol Square.

Immediately after the ceremony, the inaugural parade will wind through Capitol Square and nearby streets. Community groups, marching bands and local organizations will participate, giving residents a front-row view along the route.

Sunday, Jan. 18

Executive Mansion open house

Cap off the weekend with a free open house at the Virginia Executive Mansion from 2 to 4 p.m. Visitors can tour the governor’s residence on a first-come, first-served basis. This event is especially accessible for families or those who want a more relaxed way to experience inauguration weekend.

Even without tickets to the ceremony, people can line the streets to watch the parade and soak in the energy of the weekend. Crowds are expected, so arriving early is recommended. Friday’s market and Sunday’s open house offer a more casual way to participate.
