VSU celebrates homecoming this weekend
Grammy Award-winning gospel musician and choir director Kirk Franklin will perform at Virginia State University’s 2016 Homecoming Gospel Concert. The ticketed concert, slated for 7 to 10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at the VSU Multipurpose Center, is among the activities celebrating homecoming at the university in Ettrick.

VSU Trojans end season with second round NCAA loss

VSU signs area high schoolers for Trojans football
C.J. Bynum was an All-State foot- ball offensive lineman this past fall for Highland Springs High School in Henrico County. Now he hopes to become an All-CIAA performer for Virginia State University. Bynum’s powerful blocking helped Highland Springs to the State Group 5A football championship. His postseason honors included All Conference 12, All- Region 5A South and 5A All-State.

VSU Multipurpose Center opens to Trojans victories
You can call it Virginia State University or State of the Art University. VSU’s dazzling Multipurpose Center has emerged as the shining jewel of the CIAA. The grand opening last Saturday was a true celebration. The Trojans men’s and women’s basketball teams defeated Lincoln University and thousands of fans oohed and aahed at the new digs. “I’ve been to a lot of gyms, and what we have here is as nice as any I’ve seen in (the NCAA) Division II,” said VSU Coach Lonnie Blow.

VSU Alumni Theatre Ensemble to put on play to benefit students
The Virginia State University Alumni Theatre Ensemble is performing “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf” to raise funds for the university’s Tuition Assistance and Scholarship Fund for students. The performance will be 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, in VSU’s L. Douglas Wilder Building Auditorium, 1 Hayden Drive, in Ettrick.

VSU enrollment figures down
In an update, Virginia State University has released its fall enrollment figures. On Sept. 10, officials stated 4,632 validated undergraduate and graduate students, or students who had fully paid their bills, are enrolled.

VIA Heritage Committee to meet June 20
An organization wants to preserve the history of the Virginia Interscholastic Association, including possibly setting up a VIA Hall of Fame.

Royal fashion show at VSU
Virginia State University will host a Spring Fling “Royals” Fashion Show, a royalty-themed event, from 6 to 9 p.m. March 15 at Daniel Gymnasium on campus. Six local designers and 33 student models will show off clothing inspired by the prestige and glamour of kings and queens, said program coordinator Jairamie King. Trendy styles, ranging from graphic T-shirts and hoodies to floor- length gowns, will be showcased.
