This long vacant tobacco plant at 2220 Stockton St. is being transformed into a new home for CARITAS, a nonprofit that serves people who are homeless or struggling with substance abuse. The $27 million renovation will provide a new home base for the organization led by Karen Stanley, in addition to one of the area’s largest recovery centers for female addicts. When complete and opened next spring, the building will have 160 beds for women in recovery, plus 47 apartments for women moving into the next stage of their lives. Oliver Hill Day/ The 22nd Annual Oliver Hill Day on May 10 at the Oliver Hill Courts Building. The theme: “Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society.” The event honors the memory of Mr. Hill, a lawyer and civil rights icon whose successful legal battles against racial discrimination helped end the unconstitutional doctrine of “separate but equal.” Mr. Hill’s son, Dr. Oliver W. Hill Jr., second from right, a professor at Virginia State University, was among the keynote speakers for the event hosted by the Richmond Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.
