Celebrating sound, spirit and tradition-Thousands of people filled
Brown’s Island and the riverfront for this year’s Richmond Folk Festival, a three-day celebration of music, culture and community. From traditional Appalachian tunes to global rhythms, the event once again brought together artists and audiences from across the world. The annual event is one of the region’s most anticipated weekends. Known for their
hits “Walking in Rhythm” and “Rock Creek Park,” the Blackbyrds perform on Saturday. Formed in the early 1970s at Howard University under the guidance of jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd, the group became known for blending jazz, funk and soul.(Sandra Sellars/Richmond Free Press)
