After two months of rehabilitation, the Wildlife Center of Virginia released a Red-tailed Hawk—its 1,778th patient of the year—back into the wild on Thursday, August 7, at Maymont. Dozens gathered to witness the release, including Delegate Betsy B. Carr and City Council Vice President Katherine Jordan...Hawk #25-1778 was rescued on May 26 in Forest Hill Park with help from Julie Kacmarcik, a bird bander with the Richmond Audubon Society...Following its rescue, the Center’s rehabilitation team provided daily care and closely monitored the hawk’s progress. By mid-June, it was completing daily flight exercises in a large outdoor enclosure to rebuild strength and stamina. On July 31, the hawk was officially cleared for release...This hawk also helped save another’s life. Around the time of its rescue, a second hawk was admitted to the Center with severe internal bleeding. A blood transfusion from Hawk #25-1778 helped stabilize the injured bird and played a key role in its recovery.
