Cree takes in the artwork that she and 19 other program leaders at ART180 created to celebrate the nonprofit’s 20th year of giving young people from challenging circumstances an opportunity to express themselves through painting, sculpture, murals and other art. The anniversary exhibit opened last Friday at the organization’s Atlas Galley, 114 W. Marshall St. Work from the exhibit, titled “Twenty: ART 180 Takes the Bus,” will spend most of August touring the city on GRTC buses.

Welcoming the burgundy and gold/There’s no doubt that the Washington Football Team has real diehard fans in Richmond. After a year’s hiatus because of COVID-19, the NFL team received a big welcome back to its Richmond training camp on Wednesday by fans who turned out in droves. Many wore the team colors of burgundy and gold. Dorann Jones-Coleman of Glen Allen dressed in her WFT gear and matching sunglasses to support the team she has been cheering on for more than 20 years.

Zarina Fazaldin and her team at L&Z Historic LLC have spent the last 20 years successfully preserving and designing historic Richmond properties, which she’s turned into affordable housing. Her latest project—a three-year restoration of a historic Jackson Ward home—received a Golden Hammer Award for Best Restoration from the Historic Richmond and Storefront for Community Design partnership in 2021. The home’s bright, festive colors remind Ms. Fazaldin of her homeland, Tanzania.

The 9th Annual Richmond Jazz Festival at Maymont last weekend. Thousands of people rocked to the sounds of jazz, rhythm and blues and funk Saturday and early Sunday until a summer storm blew through around 5 p.m., causing the evening performances to be canceled. More than 1,700 sorority members from across Virginia attended the luncheon to hear Dr. Boyd, a former national president of the sorority from 2000 to 2004. Known as the sorority’s “technology presi- dent,” she helped launch Project SEE, Science in Everyday Experiences, an initiative funded by a $1.6 million National Science Foundation grant to promote math and science for African-American middle school girls. The event was hosted by the sorority’s Chesterfield Alumnae Chapter. The sorority was ounded Jan. 13, 1913, by 22 women at Howard University.

At the Greater Richmond Convention Center in Downtown, the 16th Annual Giving Heart Community Thanksgiving Feast also featured curb-side pickup and carry-out dinners for those who lined up last Thursday. A nurse volunteer stood at the entrance and took the temperature of all who walked in to get a to-go plate filled with traditional Thanksgiving fare. She also provided masks to those who needed one before entering the convention center, where volunteers were busy filling hundreds of plates with ham, turkey and all the trimmings.

Monroe Park is once again open to the public following the biggest facelift in its 167-year history as a public green space. The centerpiece of the park is the Checkers House, which has been remodeled to provide room for a coffee shop, modern restrooms and space for city and Virginia Commonwealth University police officers.
