Judge Jamison retiring // Family and friends join in unveiling the portrait of outgoing Judge Birdie Hairston Jamison, right, that will hang in the Richmond General District Court. With her at Friday’s ceremony at the Manchester Courthouse are, from left: Sheriff C.T. Woody Jr., Judge Jamison’s sister, Paige Hairston, Delegate Delores L. McQuinn, former Delegate Jean W. Cunningham, Richmond General District Court Chief Judge D. Eugene Cheek, former state Sen. Henry L. Marsh III and Judge Jamison’s other sister, Mable Lewis. Judge Jamison, 57, is the dean of the state’s traffic court judges. She began hearing cases in Richmond in 1991. Her tenure on the court officially ends Tuesday, Nov. 30. She must step down because the General Assembly declined to reappoint her to a new term last January. Numerous speakers at the retirement ceremony lauded her service to the court.

How has life changed during the pandemic? “It makes me view the world differently,” she said. “It shows how even in light of something that affects everyone, there’s still hope that we can make it out together. We’re learning more about each other. I’ve learned so much more about my family during this than before when I had a busy schedule.”

Richmond area youngsters enjoyed the new equipment during a May 20 dedication ceremony for the Markiya Dickson Imagination Zone playground in Fonticello Park. The play area commemorates the life of Markiya who was 9 years-old when she was killed by gunfire that erupted in the park four years ago. Her parents, Ciara Dickson and Mark Whitfield Sr., are pleased with the playground, yet admit that their daughter’s death remains painful. “We’ll never get past it or get over it, so we’re living through it,” said her mother. “We’re learning how to cope with it.”

Carver Elementary School Principal Kiwana S. Yates, right, is all smiles as she is celebrated during a school assembly Wednesday for winning a 2015 R.E.B. Award for Distinguished Educational Leadership. She was one of four Richmond area principals to be honored by the R.E.B. Foundation in partnership with The Community Foundation. Mrs. Yates was joined by her husband, Darnell Yates, and her mother, Patricia Evans-Branch, at the assembly, where she was presented with a check for $15,000. Half of that is for her personal use. The other $7,500 will be used for educational field trips, she said. “I was very excited and surprised,” Mrs. Yates told the Free Press of the ceremony. “The fact that the staff and students were able to pull off such a wonderful event was priceless. This made my heart melt.”

Ashley Williams, with her dog, Sebastian, a pit bull-spaniel mix, on the front porch of her East End home, is happy to stay in during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her family, she says, has experienced health scares in recent weeks, both related and unrelated to the coronavirus. “I have always valued family and friends, yet the communication with loved ones is even more cherished than before,” said the founder of BareSOUL Yoga. The experience also has shifted how she connects with people and the community — through online offerings and resources. The silver lining? “I am able to appreciate, explore and enjoy my home.”
