The site of the former Oak Grove Elementary School has been vacant since January 2013 when Oak Grove-Bellemeade Elementary opened its doors. The Redeemer Assembly of Jesus Christ originally lost its bid of $275,000 to purchase the site after a City Council vote in August 2022. In September 2022, City Council approved Lynx Ventures’s request to purchase the site for $500,000.

All was calm at Abner Clay Park in Jackson Ward on Monday, Jan. 15 as snow flurries fell and stuck in several parts of Richmond and surrounding counties. Temperatures stayed in the low 30s, crept to the 40s by Tuesday, but fell back to the 30s by Wednesday. Want more snow? Hang around until Friday and you may get your wish. Work is underway on a new central forensics laboratory on Studley Road in Hanover County. The $189 million project is scheduled for completion in 2025. The project includes construction of a four-story, state-of-the-art forensic facility, of about 89,000 square meters, according to a news release from the builder, Skanska USA. When finished, the facility will house the Virginia Department of Forensic Science and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, alongside space for analysis laboratories, autopsies, evidence storage, training, state administrative needs, among other functions.

Landscaping work that started in early June by YME Landscape continues on the former site of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. The Supreme Court of Virginia ruled Sept 2., 2021 that the state could remove the enormous statue that towered over Monument Avenue in the state’s capital for more than a century and had, for many, become a symbol of racial injustice. Calls to remove the statue and others like it that were and remain scattered throughout the United States increased following the death of George Floyd at the hands of the Detroit police on Memorial Day 2020. The defeated war general’s final fate came on Sept. 8, 2021, with the removal of a 21-foot high bronze sculpture in his image and his horse, Traveller, on a granite pedestal nearly twice that tall.

Richmond area youngsters enjoyed the new equipment during a May 20 dedication ceremony for the Markiya Dickson Imagination Zone playground in Fonticello Park. The play area commemorates the life of Markiya who was 9 years-old when she was killed by gunfire that erupted in the park four years ago. Her parents, Ciara Dickson and Mark Whitfield Sr., are pleased with the playground, yet admit that their daughter’s death remains painful. “We’ll never get past it or get over it, so we’re living through it,” said her mother. “We’re learning how to cope with it.”

The Virginia Department of Transportation continues its bridge rehabilitation project at 1st Street over Interstate 95 in Jackson Ward. This section of 1st Street will see new sidewalks, travel lanes and shoulders. The department plans to rehabilitate five bridges over I-95 in Richmond. Structure replacements and minor substructure repairs will be done on bridges on North 1st Street, North 4th Street, North 5th Street, North 7th Street and the East Broad Street overpasses.

Santa seemingly is coming down the chimney in a storefront on Grace Street between 5th and 6th streets in the old Miller & Rhoads building in Downtown Richmond. Santa Claus, the legendary figure who is the traditional patron of Christmas in the United States and other coun- tries, brings gifts to children (and many grown-ups, too). His popular image is based on traditions associated with Saint Nicholas, a fourth-century Christian saint, according to Britannica. Miller & Rhoads was a Virginia-based department store chain with its Richmond location known for its “SantaLand” upstairs attraction. It closed in 1990, according to Wikipedia.

About 40 people attended Palm Sunday services in person at Westwood Baptist Church earlier this week. Many others joined via the internet. It was just the second week the historic 147-year-old church has held in-person services since December 2021. Year-old Deilani Bland-Murph holds on to the hands of her mother, Tyshell Bland, right, and that of a Richmond SPCA volunteer at last Saturday’s 20th Annual Dog Jog and 5k to benefit the pets in the care of the local SPCA. People and their pets came from all over the region to participate in the event held at the SPCA, 2519 Hermitage Road near The Diamond. The day was packed with games and activities for people of all ages. Deilani’s mom and the volunteer helped her on the “Little Paws” Fund Run for the youngest of all. The day kicked off with a 5K run/walk for people, followed by a leisurely mile-long Dog Jog for people and their dogs.
