Daughter of Gwendolyn Robinson. She thanks her mother for her success. “My mother encouraged me to work hard and to be kind to others,” she said. How has life changed during the pandemic? “It makes me view the world differently,” she said. “It shows how even in light of something that affects everyone, there’s still hope that we can make it out together. We’re learning more about each other. I’ve learned so much more about my family during this than before when I had a busy schedule.”

Ashley Williams, with her dog, Sebastian, a pit bull-spaniel mix, on the front porch of her East End home, is happy to stay in during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her family, she says, has experienced health scares in recent weeks, both related and unrelated to the coronavirus. “I have always valued family and friends, yet the communication with loved ones is even more cherished than before,” said the founder of BareSOUL Yoga. The experience also has shifted how she connects with people and the community — through online offerings and resources. The silver lining? “I am able to appreciate, explore and enjoy my home.”

Carver Elementary School Principal Kiwana S. Yates, right, is all smiles as she is celebrated during a school assembly Wednesday for winning a 2015 R.E.B. Award for Distinguished Educational Leadership. She was one of four Richmond area principals to be honored by the R.E.B. Foundation in partnership with The Community Foundation. Mrs. Yates was joined by her husband, Darnell Yates, and her mother, Patricia Evans-Branch, at the assembly, where she was presented with a check for $15,000. Half of that is for her personal use. The other $7,500 will be used for educational field trips, she said. “I was very excited and surprised,” Mrs. Yates told the Free Press of the ceremony. “The fact that the staff and students were able to pull off such a wonderful event was priceless. This made my heart melt.”
