The bodies of the mother and daughter were found Thursday, Feb. 16, inside their home at the Oliver Crossing Apartments near Mosby Court in the East End. Police said the women were the victims of a double murder-suicide in which Walter Gaines III, Shaquenda’s 23-year-old estranged boyfriend, shot and killed them before turning the gun on himself. In addition to her sisters, Ms. Walker is survived by her two young children, who may have witnessed the fatal shootings.

Delegate Delores L. McQuinn, standing, and her 6-year-old grand-daughter Storie Znassi deliver fruit baskets and body lotion to residents of the Darby House senior apartment community in Henrico County last Friday for “I Am My Brother and Sister’s Keeper Day.” The special statewide designation for the day after Thanksgiving was approved by the General Assembly in 2018 by a resolution introduced by Delegate McQuinn. It asks Virginians to perform a random act of kindness on the Friday after the holiday. On this second annual “I Am My Brother and Sister’s Keeper Day,” Delegate McQuinn challenged people to have seven others join in doing something kind to make a difference in the lives of others. She and her granddaughter visit here with, from left, Ethel Davis, 81, Doris Laidler, 71, and Mary Berryman, 88. Other participants out doing kind acts for others on the special day included members of Delegate McQuinn’s legislative staff and members of the Richmond police and fire departments.

Brother’s and sister’s keepers: Nearly two dozen people attend the “I Am My Brother’s and Sister’s Keeper” Day program last Friday at the Reconciliation Statue at 15th and Main streets by Shockoe Bottom. Organized by Richmond Delegate Delores L. McQuinn, the event sought healing, cooperation, love, peace and an end to violence and racism in the community. Political, community and faith leaders attended the event, including Delegate Eileen Filler-Corn of Fairfax County. Judge Jamison retiring // Family and friends join in unveiling the portrait of outgoing Judge Birdie Hairston Jamison, right, that will hang in the Richmond General District Court. With her at Friday’s ceremony at the Manchester Courthouse are, from left: Sheriff C.T. Woody Jr., Judge Jamison’s sister, Paige Hairston, Delegate Delores L. McQuinn, former Delegate Jean W. Cunningham, Richmond General District Court Chief Judge D. Eugene Cheek, former state Sen. Henry L. Marsh III and Judge Jamison’s other sister, Mable Lewis. Judge Jamison, 57, is the dean of the state’s traffic court judges. She began hearing cases in Richmond in 1991. Her tenure on the court officially ends Tuesday, Nov. 30. She must step down because the General Assembly declined to reappoint her to a new term last January. Numerous speakers at the retirement ceremony lauded her service to the court.

Along with other family, friends and neighbors, the son and daughter of Stafford Alvin Flowers and Ella Lee Fountain Flowers unveil the honorary street sign, Flowers Way, that honors their father and mother. Stafford Alvin Flowers, who died in 2011, was a brick mason and owner of a contracting business. He also was a co-founder of the Metropolitan Business League, and a regional director for the National Business League, which evolved from the Negro Business League founded by Booker T. Washington in 1900. Ella Lee Fountain Flowers, a former Virginia Union University and Richmond Public Schools educator, died May 15, 2022. Mrs. Flowers was an 80-year member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and a lifelong member of the NAACP, serving as the secretary for the Richmond Chapter. The street dedication was initiated by 3rd District North Side City Council woman Ann-Frances Lambert, who wants the history of Black Northside Richmond locked in for all to know. She reminded people that a large percentage of Black Americans, when researching their genealogy, realize they have a connection to Richmond.
