Singleton honored // Christopher Smith Rose Singleton, right, unveils the honorary street sign renaming the 2700 block of East Grace Street after her late husband, Oliver R.H. Singleton, president and chief executive officer of the Metropolitan Business League. Richmond City Council voted in February to authorize the sign to honor Mr. Singleton’s role as an advocate for minority-owned and small business development. Dozens of family members and friends were on hand for the ceremony Tuesday. Helping to remove the sign are the Singletons’ daughter, Christine, and son, Oliver.

Lauderdale, operations manager of the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia, is surprised with a celebration last Friday honoring her 20 years of service at the museum in Jackson Ward. A steady fixture at the museum, Ms. Lauderdale has performed numerous jobs during her tenure, including chief docent, gift shop manager, head of visitor services and museum manager. Saturday, Jan. 13, was a day of celebration as thousands of people packed Capitol Square for the inauguration of Virginia’s 73rd chief executive. Gov. Ralph S. Northam, Lt. Gov. Justin E. Fairfax and Attorney General Mark R. Herring were sworn in on a crisp afternoon. The ceremony and parade reflected Virginia’s rich heritage and diversity, showcasing people of all ages, races, religions and regions. A glittering inaugural ball at the Main Street Station Train Shed in Shockoe Bottom closed out the historic day.

New School Board member Kenya J. Gibson takes the oath of office Monday for the 3rd District seat on the Richmond School Board from Richmond Circuit Court Clerk Edward F. Jewett, with her daughter, Scarlett, 11, and her son, Phoenix, 8, at her side. Ms. Gibson, a 43-year-old who works in health care marketing, won a four-way contest on Nov. 7 to fill the unexpired term of Jeff Bourne, who was elected to the House of Delegates in February. Ms. Gibson called during the campaign for more funding for public education and additional support for high-risk and underprivileged students. She will serve until 2020.
