New citizens- Judge Roger L. Gregory, chief judge of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, talks to 96 immigrants and their family members during the Fourth of July naturalization ceremony where they officially became U.S. citizens. Anti-Trump demonstrators march along Broad Street near 7th Street in Downtown after the polls closed Tuesday night to express their disdain for the nation’s commander in chief. The group of about 75 gathered at City Hall, with its numbers dwindling as it made its way to the area near Virginia Commonwealth University’s campus. They chanted “No justice, no peace,” “Black Lives Matter,” “Peaceful protest” and other slogans as they expressed hope that the president would be voted out of office.

Saturday, Jan. 13, was a day of celebration as thousands of people packed Capitol Square for the inauguration of Virginia’s 73rd chief executive. Gov. Ralph S. Northam, Lt. Gov. Justin E. Fairfax and Attorney General Mark R. Herring were sworn in on a crisp afternoon. The ceremony and parade reflected Virginia’s rich heritage and diversity, showcasing people of all ages, races, religions and regions. A glittering inaugural ball at the Main Street Station Train Shed in Shockoe Bottom closed out the historic day.

This is the marker to Mr. Hill’s late law partner, Judge Robinson, who went on to break color barriers in the federal court system and rise to become chief judge of the powerful U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. Mr. Hill and Judge Robinson played key roles in the landmark 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision by the U.S. Supreme Court that struck down government-sanctioned racial segregation of public schools and led to other landmark civil rights laws.

The Nottoway Indian Tribe’s Annual PowWow returned Sept. 17 and 18 at the Surry County Parks and Recreation Center in Surry. These new equipment lockers are among $1.75 million in improvements to Richmond Fire Station 10 at Hermitage Road and West Leigh Street. The view was enhanced with a fish eye lens. The photo was taken at Tuesday’s grand reopening of the station near the Richmond Ambulance Authority. Improvements also include redone living quarters that now can accommodate male and female personnel. Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones joined city Fire Chief Robert Creecy to officially put the revamped station back into service.

Singleton honored // Christopher Smith Rose Singleton, right, unveils the honorary street sign renaming the 2700 block of East Grace Street after her late husband, Oliver R.H. Singleton, president and chief executive officer of the Metropolitan Business League. Richmond City Council voted in February to authorize the sign to honor Mr. Singleton’s role as an advocate for minority-owned and small business development. Work is underway on a new central forensics laboratory on Studley Road in Hanover County. The $189 million project is scheduled for completion in 2025. The project includes construction of a four-story, state-of-the-art forensic facility, of about 89,000 square meters, according to a news release from the builder, Skanska USA. When finished, the facility will house the Virginia Department of Forensic Science and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, alongside space for analysis laboratories, autopsies, evidence storage, training, state administrative needs, among other functions.
