A sign of support or a statement? This homemade “Black Lives Matter” banner was spotted on a brick wall in front of a Monument Avenue residence near Allen Avenue, the intersection where the huge statue to Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee stands on a traffic circle. The area around the statue has been the epicenter of protests over racial injustice and police brutality since May. Signs like this one and logos with BLM have become commonplace on businesses and other buildings in and near Downtown and the circle following an early spate of window-smashing, fires and looting. The signs often were posted as plea for anyone bent on destruction to spare a structure.

Mr. Green has worked 27 of those years at Chimborazo Elementary in Church Hill. Mr. Green, 61, knew that he was setting up earlier for a program for the superintendent and Mayor Levar M. Stoney, but had no clue the program was to recognize and honor him. He was tipped off when he saw his wife and family members, but was brought to tears by the ceremony, which also was attended by Chimborazo Principal David Peck and custodians from other schools.

Mayor Levar M. Stoney prepares to raise the Progress Pride flag outside City Hall’s Broad Street entrance. It is the first time a symbol of the gay community has flown outside the 18-story municipal center in Downtown. The multicolored flag went up last Friday in recognition of Richmond’s annual PrideFest weekend and flew through Wednesday when Virginia PrideFest Month ended. The mayor stated the flag was raised to let LGBTQ Richmonders “know that this city stands behind them.” The Progress Pride flag was chosen because, along with traditional rainbow colors, it incorporates additional stripes to symbolize the inclusion of African-Americans, Latinos, people of color, transgender individuals and those living with HIV/AIDS. Lacette Cross and Louise “Cheezi” Farmer, founders of Black Pride RVA, were among the participants at the upbeat ceremony. Black Pride RVA also received Virginia Pride’s annual Firework Award for being catalysts for community change.

The house of U.S. civil rights icon Rosa Parks, rebuilt by artist Ryan Mendoza, is on display in the courtyard of an 18th century Royal Palace, in Naples, Italy. It is the latest stop for the house in a years-long saga that began when Mrs. Parks’ niece saved the tiny two-story home from demolition in Detroit after the 2008 financial crisis.

Speakers at the event, organized by Coming to the Table, recited excerpts from Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech that was delivered at the 1963 march. The walk also marked the 65th anniversary of the lynching of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old from Chicago who was brutally murdered in Money, Miss., in 1955 for allegedly whistling at a white woman. His lynching, and a photo of his disfigured body lying in a casket that was published by JET magazine, drew widespread public attention to the brutality Black people faced, particularly in the South, and helped mobilize the Civil Rights Movement.

Jasmin McDougle, 23, of Virginia Beach brings attention to justice for Elijah McClain, the 23-year-old massage therapist who died after a police encounter in Aurora, Colo., on Aug. 24, 2019. He was walking home from a convenience store when he was stopped by police and put in a chokehold. Paramedics called to the scene administered ketamine to sedate him. He died seven days later after being removed from life support. Three officers involved were put on administrative leave at the time and have since been re-assigned. A main demand of protesters, including this peaceful sit-in last Friday at the Lee statue by the 381 Movement, is to stop the police killing of African-Americans and people of color.

Members of the Delver Woman’s Club of Richmond celebrate the group’s 75th anniversary through its Legacy Community Service Project – a contribution of $5,685 to Feed More, Central Virginia’s primary hunger relief organization. The ceremony, held June 30 outside Feed More’s North Side headquarters, featured a musical prelude by the Jason Jenkins Quartet. The women’s club, which traces its early roots to a literary club for African-American women, was officially started in 1945 and has dedicated itself to civic engagement and service. The club’s 75th anniversary theme: “The Past, The Present, The Future: Continued Commitment to the Community.” In 1967, the club was among the founding members of Meals on Wheels, a program that delivers meals to seniors in their homes and which now comes under Feed More’s umbrella of agencies. The gift to Feed More by the Delver Woman’s Club’s 70 members, their families and friends will provide 22,740 meals to people in the Richmond area. Participating in the program are, from left, Jean T. Williams, legacy project chair; Theo S. Jones, immediate past president; Douglas H. Pick, Feed More’s president and chief executive officer; and Kathryn Erhardt, Feed More’s manager of planned and leadership giving.

Work is underway on the $1.2 million renovation of Virginia Union University’s renamed Wil- lie Lanier Field at Hovey Stadium. Mr. Lanier, a former All-Star and Pro Bowl player with the Kansas City Chiefs from 1967 to 1977, played on Hovey Field when he was a student nearly 60 years ago at Richmond’s Maggie L. Walker High School next door. He has played a vital role in the project to resurface the field from grass to FieldTurf. When the VUU Panthers football team kicks off its 2020 season home opener on Oct. 3 against Shaw University, the new field will be a point of pride for the team and will put VUU on the same level as universities around the nation, officials stated. “That field shows something,” Mr. Lanier stated. “It shows the ability of what it is to provide for those young individuals who can take confidence and pride in where they play and how they are able to perform.” Squares of the old grass field, which has been in place since 1907, are being sold online to help fund the project.
