The Rev. Lois Bias, co-pastor of Bringing God’s Word To Life Church in South Side, is COVID-19 ready as she prepares to distribute bags of food at a drive- thru operation she and a team of members set up last Saturday morning outside the church on Bryce Lane. The 23-year-old church is a distributor for Feed More, which provided most of the items, Rev. Bias said. The church also received donations from a nearby KFC restaurant and Wawa stores, she said. At least a dozen members participated with Rev. Bias and her husband, the Rev. Ellis Bias, in packing the groceries, setting up the drive-thru and giving away the food to area residents.

The adjunct education professor at the University of Richmond teaches one weekly online class now from the comfort of home. “I know I thrive in a face-to-face setting,” she said, while admitting that online teaching “takes a little more effort.” The pandemic, she said, has brought a pause to most everyone’s life. Improvements to Abner Clay Park continue to take shape. New trees have been planted and old concrete has been replaced in the park at Leigh Street and Brook Road in Jackson Ward. Richmond is investing $1.27 million in renovating the park. Centennial Contractor Enterprises began the work in October, with completion expected within 60 to 90 days, including installation of a multipurpose field for football and other sports. An anonymous donation of $200,000 enabled installation of a new children’s playground, according to a city official. The only question is whether the pandemic will have cleared up so children and families can start using the park when the work is finished.

On a clear or cloudy day, several Richmond schools are generating energy to help power their facility. Here, solar panels on the roof of Lucille M. Brown Middle School on Jahnke Road in South Side are the latest effort by Richmond Public Schools to “Go Green” and cut energy costs. Richmond Public Schools Superintendent Jason Kamras, Gov. Ralph S. Northam and other officials held a news conference last Friday at the school to announce that the last of 10 city schools now have solar panels. The panels will produce enough electricity to cover about 24 percent of the schools’ electrical needs. The $2.9 million project, which also includes an energy monitoring system, was completed during the summer and was paid for by a grant from RVA Solar Fund, part of the Community Foundation for a Greater Richmond, and were developed by Secure Futures Solar, a clean energy company. The panels will save RPS approximately $2 million in utility costs over the next 20 years, or about $100,000 annually, officials said. Officials said it is the largest solar energy system at a K-12 school division in Virginia to date. The other city schools with solar panels are Huguenot High School, Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School and Oak Grove, Miles J. Jones, Linwood Holton, Blackwell, Fisher, Broad Rock and G.H. Reid elementary schools.
