Monroe Park is once again open to the public following the biggest facelift in its 167-year history as a public green space. The centerpiece of the park is the Checkers House, which has been remodeled to provide room for a coffee shop, modern restrooms and space for city and Virginia Commonwealth University police officers. Behind the scenes of ‘Betty & Pancho’ // Francisco Mora Catlett, son of the renowned late artist Elizabeth Catlett, talks with Meg Gottwald about his mother and her work following a screening and discussion of the documentary “Betty & Pancho” last Friday at the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia. The documentary focuses on Ms. Catlett’s inspiration and the artistic collaboration between she and her husband, Francisco “Pancho” Mora, a Mexican painter. Mr. Mora Catlett and his brother, Juan Mora Catlett, co-produced the film. Alex Nyerges, director of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, led a conversation with Mr. Mora Catlett before an audience of about 60 people.

Swearing-in // Richmond’s new city treasurer, Nichole Richardson Armstead, is sworn in last Saturday by Richmond General District Court Judge Jacqueline S. McClenney during a ceremony in Council Chambers in Richmond City Hall. Mrs. Armstead was elected to the $83,594 post in November, succeeding longtime treasurer Eunice M. Wilder, who retired. Her husband, Stafford L. Armstead, holds the Bible during the ceremony, while their children watch. They are, from left, Katrina, Richardson and Stafford II. Mrs. Armstead, a project management consultant, has 17 years of experience with the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. She is the daughter of former Richmond City Councilman Henry W. “Chuck” Richardson.

New School Board member Kenya J. Gibson takes the oath of office Monday for the 3rd District seat on the Richmond School Board from Richmond Circuit Court Clerk Edward F. Jewett, with her daughter, Scarlett, 11, and her son, Phoenix, 8, at her side. Ms. Gibson, a 43-year-old who works in health care marketing, won a four-way contest on Nov. 7 to fill the unexpired term of Jeff Bourne, who was elected to the House of Delegates in February. Ms. Gibson called during the campaign for more funding for public education and additional support for high-risk and underprivileged students. She will serve until 2020.

A new historic marker honoring Richmond business and civil rights leader Maggie L. Walker sits in front of the historic St. Luke Building that has stood in the 900 block of St. James Street in Gilpin Court since 1903. Now a 12-unit apartment building with first-floor commercial space, the building began life as the national headquarters of the United Order of St. Luke, a Black fraternal and insurance group led by Mrs. Walker from 1899 until her death in 1934. Making bold moves, she pushed the fraternal order into developing the headquarters and taking other entrepreneurial action, including opening a bank.
