Richmond area youngsters enjoyed the new equipment during a May 20 dedication ceremony for the Markiya Dickson Imagination Zone playground in Fonticello Park. The play area commemorates the life of Markiya who was 9 years-old when she was killed by gunfire that erupted in the park four years ago. Her parents, Ciara Dickson and Mark Whitfield Sr., are pleased with the playground, yet admit that their daughter’s death remains painful. “We’ll never get past it or get over it, so we’re living through it,” said her mother. “We’re learning how to cope with it.”

Japan ‘Sister City’ recognition: Richmond Mayor Levar M. Stoney greets several students from Saitama, Japan, last week during their visit to City Council chambers to recognize the 20th anniversary of Saitama’s partnership with Richmond in the Sister City program. Remembering Leonard Lambert Sr. // Hundreds of people gathered to remember Leonard W. Lambert Sr. at a funeral service Tuesday at Saint Paul’s Baptist Church in Henrico County. Stirring music filled the sanctuary and family and friends shared warm reflections of Mr. Lambert, who was described as a man of strong faith who left a lasting mark in Metro Richmond by his decades of legal, church and community service. Dr. John W. Kinney, dean of the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University, delivered the eulogy at the service, which also included remarks from Mr. Lambert’s sister, Dr. Elizabeth Johns, Mayor Dwight C. Jones and others. Among his achievements, Mr. Lambert became Richmond’s first African-American judge in 1973 when he was named a substitute judge for the Richmond General District Court. At left, his wife, Sylvia J. Lambert, and other family members leave their pews during the recessional at the conclusion of the service.

Carver Elementary School Principal Kiwana S. Yates, right, is all smiles as she is celebrated during a school assembly Wednesday for winning a 2015 R.E.B. Award for Distinguished Educational Leadership. She was one of four Richmond area principals to be honored by the R.E.B. Foundation in partnership with The Community Foundation. Mrs. Yates was joined by her husband, Darnell Yates, and her mother, Patricia Evans-Branch, at the assembly, where she was presented with a check for $15,000. Half of that is for her personal use. The other $7,500 will be used for educational field trips, she said. “I was very excited and surprised,” Mrs. Yates told the Free Press of the ceremony. “The fact that the staff and students were able to pull off such a wonderful event was priceless. This made my heart melt.”

City officials and representatives of five overseas cities join Monday in unveiling Richmond’s new International Guidepost at Kanawha Plaza amid a downpour. The new sign celebrates Richmond’s Sister City relationship with Richmond upon Thames, England; Saitama City, Japan; Ségou, Republic of Mali; Windhoek, Namibia; and Zhengzhou, China. Saitama’s representatives included members of the Japanese city’s Little League baseball team. Richmond began a relationship with its English namesake in 1930 and began forging bonds with additional cities in 1980 after forming the 13-member Sister Cities Commission.
