Several of the ‘Richmond 34’ stand by the historic marker dedicated Tuesday in Downtown on the site of their sit-in at the old Thalhimers department store in early 1960 to protest the store’s whites-only dining policy. Honoring a pioneer // President Obama presents the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Katherine G. Johnson of Newport News on Nov. 24 during an event in the East Room of the White House. The 97-year-old was one of the few women and African-Americans who worked for NASA when she started as a pool mathematician at the space agency’s Langley Research Center in Hampton in 1953. Her mathematic computations have influenced every major space program from America’s first manned space flight in 1961 to today’s Space Shuttle program. Mrs. Johnson was one of 17 individuals honored last week by President Obama, some posthumously, with the nation’s highest civilian award.

Rendering by Kendall/Heaton Associates Changing the skyline Work began Monday on this 20-story, sail-shaped office tower that Dominion Resources is constructing in Downtown. The building, which is expected to have 1,000 employees and four floors of parking underground, is to open in 2019 in the block bounded by Cary, 6th, 7th and Canal streets. Dominion and the builders, Hourigan Construction Inc. of Richmond and Clayco Corp. of St. Louis, are promising that minority firms will play a significant role in the development. Dominion has hired Kenneth Johnson of the marketing and public relations firm Johnson Inc. as a diversity consultant. Dominion has yet to release the cost for the building, but it is projected to be around $100 million.
