Justice walk // Colorful signs that read “Keep Kids Free” and “#PrisonsDontWork” are carried by young people of Richmond to bring awareness to the school-to-prison pipeline during last Friday’s 3rd Annual Juvenile Justice Parade in Downtown. Artists, community activists, faith leaders and formerly incarcerated individuals marched in solidarity to protest the placement of youths in lock-up instead of community-based alternatives. The parade, hosted by ART 180 and the Legal Aid Justice Center, concluded at ATLAS, ART 180’s youth gallery, 114 W. Marshall St. in Jackson Ward. The gallery is showcasing “My Reality,” a virtual reality installation created by teens affected by Richmond’s juvenile justice system.

Behind the scenes of ‘Betty & Pancho’ // Francisco Mora Catlett, son of the renowned late artist Elizabeth Catlett, talks with Meg Gottwald about his mother and her work following a screening and discussion of the documentary “Betty & Pancho” last Friday at the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia. The documentary focuses on Ms. Catlett’s inspiration and the artistic collaboration between she and her husband, Francisco “Pancho” Mora, a Mexican painter. Mr. Mora Catlett and his brother, Juan Mora Catlett, co-produced the film. Alex Nyerges, director of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, led a conversation with Mr. Mora Catlett before an audience of about 60 people.

Historical marker dedicated // A marker noting the historical significance of Anderson Cemetery in Henrico County now stands at Portsmouth Street and New York Avenue in Glen Allen at the cemetery’s entrance. The marker was dedicated Tuesday in a ceremony held by the Friends of Anderson Cemetery, a group working to clean up and maintain the burial grounds that date to the mid-1800s. The 2-acre site served as one of the earliest cemeteries for African-Americans in the Yellow Tavern area. From obituary notices, roughly 200 people were buried in the cemetery over the course of a century, with one of the earliest graves dating back to 1881, organizers said. Many were members of Mount Olive Baptist Church, St. Peter Baptist Church and other churches in the area. A new nonprofit, Anderson Cemetery League, is working toward permanent stewardship of the cemetery.

Virginia Institute of Pastoral Care // Celebrating 50 years of service Richmond Delegate Betsy B. Carr, left, presents a General Assembly resolution congratulating the Virginia Institute of Pastoral Care for 50 years of providing counseling to families, couples, children and individuals to “restore healing and hope.” Receiving the proclamation at a celebration Sept. 28 at the Virginia Historical Society are Frances Broaddus-Crutchfield, president of VIPCare’s board and contributing Free Press writer, and Dr. Douglas M. Thorpe, executive director of the Henrico County-based nonprofit. Sister Cora Marie Billings, a member of the VIPCare board, also was honored for her advocacy and work to promote counseling in the Richmond region. VIPCare was founded in 1967 by a multiracial, ecumenical group.

Coming home to history U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine tours the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia Sept. 21 to view the exhibit about a legal case he was involved with as a civil rights lawyer in Richmond. The exhibit, “Redlining in Richmond: HOME v. Nationwide,” details the historic suit Housing Opportunities Made Equal Inc., or HOME, lodged against the insurance company for discriminatory practices, including denying insurance to homeowners in African-American neighborhoods. Sen. Kaine represented HOME in the successful suit. Joining the tour is Heather Mullins Crislip, president and CEO of HOME. The exhibit is on display through Oct. 14 at the museum located in Jackson Ward.

Linemen bound for Fla. to restore power lost after Hurricane Irma // Chuck Lafoon hands supplies to Justin Carmichael as the two Dominion Energy linemen load a bucket truck at the company’s operations center at 7500 W. Broad St. before heading to Florida to help restore power lost after Hurricane Irma blew through. They are among 120 Dominion employees, including safety experts, damage assessors and others, deployed Tuesday to the Sunshine State to help rebuild the power grid from Miami to Jacksonville that the powerful storm destroyed, leaving millions of people in the dark. Dominion also has sent 700 employees of private tree contractors it uses in Virginia and North Carolina to help remove downed trees that took out power lines. The company also is sending drones and helicopters to provide crews with aerial feedback about conditions they will face on the ground. This is just one way that Central Virginia is responding to help in the wake of hurricanes Harvey and Irma that struck Texas, Florida and several other Southern states. Everything from money to bottled water has flowed to distressed areas, while many people and rescued pets have found temporary refuge in Virginia. Dominion’s response is evidence of the mutual assistance pact among electric utilities that ensures outside help when a member like Florida Power & Light is overwhelmed by a storm. Florida and other states have provided similar help to Dominion after storms have knocked out power to huge swaths of the Virginia company’s grid in recent years. “We are proud of the willingness of our employees and contractors to leave their families and friends to work long days providing desperately needed help,” said Ed Baine, Dominion Energy’s senior vice president for power delivery. Mr. Carmichael said he and his colleagues expect to be away at least two weeks. He said linemen are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week to respond to emergencies, and this is just the latest to come up. “We know how important our work is and how much people are depending on us at this time to get their power back on,” he said.

Getting ‘kicks’ for school // When it came to choosing new shoes for school, Richmond area youngsters had a wide selection of styles and colors at the 12th Annual “New Shoes for Back to School” program Monday at Third Street Bethel A.M.E. Church in Jackson Ward. Fourteen churches, a synagogue and several businesses collected more than 4,000 pairs of shoes to give to students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
