Fun, sun and watermelon // Kristopher Adams, 6, and his sister, Kristianna, 5, cool off with some juicy watermelon last Sunday at the 34th Annual Carytown Watermelon Festival in Richmond. The free event attracts an estimated 118,000 people each year. In addition to collectively devouring a few thousand watermelons, the crowd enjoyed entertainment from 50 bands and other performers on five stages and browsed the wares of more than 100 street vendors and retail store merchants.

Fencing blocks off 17th Street and the Farmers’ Market — the first step in a $4.3 million facelift that will transform the street and the marketplace between Main and Franklin streets into a European-style plaza. Despite the work, restaurants and shops that face the market remain open for business, with owners and operators hoping customers will continue to stop by. The transformation is expected to be finished by March. When done, the revamped market is to be the outdoor extension of nearby Main Street Station, whose interior has been redone and includes a huge, glass-faced event space, a soon-to-open tourist welcome center and room for retail shops. The project is part of the city’s spending to rejuvenate the Shockoe Bottom area. Nearby to the west, the city plans to invest more than $19 million to develop a museum-style space to recall Richmond’s role in the slave trade more than 150 years ago.

Honoring historic Girl Scout troops Scout leader Glennys Fleming, center, holds the resolution honoring Girl Scout Troops #34 and #35 that was presented Monday night by Richmond City Council to Ms. Fleming and several scouts from the troops sponsored by Ebenezer Baptist Church. Historic Troop #34, the first African-American troop in the South, was chartered in March 1932 after Emma Watson wanted her daughter to participate in scouting as she had before moving to Richmond from Chicago. With the support of influential Richmond women such as Maggie L. Walker and Lena Watson, dean of students at Virginia Union University, Ms. Watson advocated for the local Girl Scouts council to create a local African-American troop. It met at VUU. In 1936, Troop #35 was established at Ebenezer Baptist Church, which began sponsoring Troop #34 in 2015.

Honored for public service // State Sen. Rosalyn R. Dance of Petersburg, who represents parts of Richmond and four other localities in the General Assembly, is recognized by the Richmond City Council on Monday night for nearly 25 years of public service. As an elected official, she previously served in the House of Delegates and on Petersburg City Council for 12 years, including several terms as Petersburg mayor from 1992 to 2004. With her is her 16-year-old grandson, Jarratt R. Dance-Kelly, who is visiting from La Verne, Calif.

Cityscape // Crime tape and police and firefighters in action are all too common in Richmond and other cities. Above, officers and police cars pack the intersection of 3rd and Main streets in Downtown around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday following the police shooting of a man wielding a large knife and an ax. Police Chief Alfred Durham said officers shot the man when he did not respond to commands to drop the weapons, and a Taser proved ineffective in stopping him. When the man attacked the officers, two fired, hitting him. The man, later identified as Alexander J. Schoessel, 23, of Chesterfield, was pronounced dead at 10:31 a.m. Tuesday at a Richmond hospital. Officer John Rotondi also was hit by friendly fire during the incident. He was taken to a hospital, where he was treated and released. Right, firefighters hose down a smoldering pile of driftwood Tuesday afternoon underneath a pedestrian bridge across the James River that connects Brown’s Island and Belle Isle in Downtown.

Eye on the ball Tiffany Smith of Richmond, 6, has her eye on the ball at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Courts in Battery Park. She was among scores of youths who turned out Wednesday, July 12, for the Arthur Ashe Birthday Blast at the park, where they received complimentary tennis lessons and were on hand to celebrate murals created in his honor. A native of Richmond, Mr. Ashe was the first African-American male tennis player to win the U.S. Open, Australian Open and Wimbledon. He was also the first African-American male player to be ranked No. 1. Please see more photos on B2.

Sandra Sellars/Richmond Free Press Workers continue to pack and clear out the offices of delegates and senators at the General Assembly Building, 201 N. 9th St. in Capitol Square, which is slated for demolition later this year. The boxes are being moved two blocks to the Pocahontas Building at 900 E. Main St., which will be the legislature’s office center until a replacement building is completed on the site of the current building. The next step comes on Tuesday, July 11, when the state will sell surplus office equipment and other items to the public, government agencies and public schools. The sale is 9 a.m. for agencies and schools, with the public able to shop at 11 a.m. A portion of the General Assembly Building dates to 1912, when it was built for a bank. The building has housed the offices of state legislators since 1976. The governor and General Assembly have set aside $300 million for the new building and a new parking deck for Capitol Square. The money also will pay for renovation of Old City Hall, now part of the Capitol Square complex of state buildings.
