Work is underway on a new central forensics laboratory on Studley Road in Hanover County. The $189 million project is scheduled for completion in 2025. The project includes construction of a four-story, state-of-the-art forensic facility, of about 89,000 square meters, according to a news release from the builder, Skanska USA. When finished, the facility will house the Virginia Department of Forensic Science and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, alongside space for analysis laboratories, autopsies, evidence storage, training, state administrative needs, among other functions.

Undine Smith Moore, a classically trained pianist, who was born in Jarrett, was hired by Virginia State College in 1927 where she spent more than 40 years composing vocal music and teaching piano, organ and music theory to students. Mrs. Moore received numerous awards throughout her life, both for her choral works and her accomplishments as a music educator, which she once called “an art in itself.” She received honorary doctorates from Indiana University and Virginia State College and a humanitarian award from Fisk University, and was named music laureate of the state of Virginia in 1975. Other awards included the National Association of Negro Musicians Distinguished Achievement Award in 1975 and the Virginia Governor’s Award in the Arts in 1985, according to the Library of Virginia’s archives. Often referred to as the “Dean of Black Women Composers,” Mrs. Moore began composing while at Fisk University. Although she composed works for piano and for other instrumental groups, Mrs. Moore is best known for her choral works, including “Scenes from the Life of a Martyr,” based on the works of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

Landscaping work that started in early June by YME Landscape continues on the former site of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. The Supreme Court of Virginia ruled Sept 2., 2021 that the state could remove the enormous statue that towered over Monument Avenue in the state’s capital for more than a century and had, for many, become a symbol of racial injustice. Calls to remove the statue and others like it that were and remain scattered throughout the United States increased following the death of George Floyd at the hands of the Detroit police on Memorial Day 2020. The defeated war general’s final fate came on Sept. 8, 2021, with the removal of a 21-foot high bronze sculpture in his image and his horse, Traveller, on a granite pedestal nearly twice that tall.
