In 1933, Mr. Robinson used his own money to purchase a traffic light for the intersection of Leigh and Adams streets after witnessing the dangers young African-Americans faced in trying to cross the busy street. New School Board member Kenya J. Gibson takes the oath of office Monday for the 3rd District seat on the Richmond School Board from Richmond Circuit Court Clerk Edward F. Jewett, with her daughter, Scarlett, 11, and her son, Phoenix, 8, at her side. Ms. Gibson, a 43-year-old who works in health care marketing, won a four-way contest on Nov. 7 to fill the unexpired term of Jeff Bourne, who was elected to the House of Delegates in February. Ms. Gibson called during the campaign for more funding for public education and additional support for high-risk and underprivileged students. She will serve until 2020.

“Each year on Oct. 10, the Sacred Ground Project hosts a community gathering at the African Burial Ground to mark the date in 1800 when the great slave rebellion leader Gabriel was executed at the town gallows,” said Ana Edwards, founder and chair of the project. “We gather to honor Gabriel and all those who gave their lives in the cause of freedom, to celebrate more than 20 years of learning the history of this sacred ground and to rededicate ourselves to reclaiming and properly memorializing Shockoe Bottom once the epicenter of the U.S. domestic slave trade. This year we also are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Virginia Defenders for Freedom, Justice & Equality!”
