Henrico resident Robin Williams, lead right, was diagnosed with breast cancer in May of 2020 during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Mrs. Williams, who is legally blind, relied on her husband, Larry D. Williams for support, in that he was the only family member who could be with her inside the hospital due to the COVID19 restrictions at the time. Mrs. Williams’ breast cancer treatment plan included 16 rounds of radiation at the VCU Massey Cancer Center in Richmond. Since coming home to recover nearly three years ago, Mrs. Williams continually has been supported by her family and friends.

In recognition of October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Mrs. Williams started her first “Robin’s Walk” in October 2020. On Oct. 23, she was joined by family and friends who have shown up each year to support her wellness journey and to build awareness about the disease. Despite the chilly, drizzly afternoon at Henrico County’s Osborne Park, Ms. Williams, along with family (including 18-month-old Kaleb Quivers shown holding a balloon) and friends, completed a 1-mile loop around the park before returning to a picnic shelter for lunch, pink cupcakes (baked by Myra Nelson, Mrs. Williams’ cousin), games and fellowship.

“Each year on Oct. 10, the Sacred Ground Project hosts a community gathering at the African Burial Ground to mark the date in 1800 when the great slave rebellion leader Gabriel was executed at the town gallows,” said Ana Edwards, founder and chair of the project. “We gather to honor Gabriel and all those who gave their lives in the cause of freedom, to celebrate more than 20 years of learning the history of this sacred ground and to rededicate ourselves to reclaiming and properly memorializing Shockoe Bottom once the epicenter of the U.S. domestic slave trade. Hailing from New Orleans, the 79rs Gang brought its revolutionary sounds and riveting performance to the Richmond Folk Festival. On Mardi Gras Day in New Orleans, the city’s Black Masking Carnival gangs enact ritualistic musical battles in the streets, decked out in impossibly colorful, intricate costumery. Rivalries were put aside when Jermaine Bossier, Big Chief of the 7th Ward Creole Hunters, and Romeo Bougere, Big Chief of the 9th Ward Hunters, teamed up to form the musical powerhouse 79rs Gang. On Sept. 12, Tynashia ‘Nae’ Humphrey, 15, was walking to the store in her Gilpin Court neighborhood when she was killed by a bullet not intended for her. In response to her killing last week, a march and rally were organized from the parking lot of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church to the steps of the John Marshall Courts Building on Sunday, Sept. 18. Participants included Ms. Humphrey’s family members, friends and others who mourn her death.

Runners take off during the inaugural RUN RICHMOND 16.19 that started and ended at Kanawha Plaza in Downtown Richmond on Saturday, Sept. 17. The run was organized by actor and model Djimon Hounsou’s foundation in collaboration with The Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia and Sports Backers. The run shines a light on the achievements of the Black community over the past 400 plus years with the designated courses of 16.19 km and 6.19 miles.
