One would never guess why Pauline Wheeler was so excited last Saturday, Aug. 13, when she beamed after Haywood Watkins applied finishing touches to her new “do” at his Semmes Avenue hair salon. Mrs. Wheeler, who lives on Richmond’s North Side, wanted her hair to look just right for her 100th birthday celebration on Saturday evening, and for her actual birthday on Monday, Aug 15. After Mr. Watkins worked his magic on this undeniable queen, she glanced in the mirror, smiled and asked, “Is that Eartha Kitt?”

She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease at age 66. About 14% of Black people in America over the age of 65 have Alzheimer’s, compared with 10% of white people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Virginia Institute of Pastoral Care // Celebrating 50 years of service Richmond Delegate Betsy B. Carr, left, presents a General Assembly resolution congratulating the Virginia Institute of Pastoral Care for 50 years of providing counseling to families, couples, children and individuals to “restore healing and hope.” Receiving the proclamation at a celebration Sept. 28 at the Virginia Historical Society are Frances Broaddus-Crutchfield, president of VIPCare’s board and contributing Free Press writer, and Dr. Douglas M. Thorpe, executive director of the Henrico County-based nonprofit. Sister Cora Marie Billings, a member of the VIPCare board, also was honored for her advocacy and work to promote counseling in the Richmond region. VIPCare was founded in 1967 by a multiracial, ecumenical group.

BUCKS FOR BOOKS - Tyshawna Hankerson, right, is all smiles as she and Tracey Oliver, vice president for administration at the Richmond Free Press, hold a ceremonial replica of the $1,000 book scholarship award to help Ms. Hankerson purchase books this fall when she enters Virginia Commonwealth University. The Free Press joined other area businesses and organizations to provide book scholarship awards through the KLM Scholarship Foundation Inc. More than $30,000 was awarded to 30 students from Virginia at last Saturday’s awards ceremony at Linwood Holton Elementary School on North Side. Speakers included Kimberley L. Martin, who founded the Richmond-based nonprofit. It has awarded nearly $150,000 in book scholarships since its founding in 2002.

Rallying to save Belmead// An intent crowd listens as volunteer Rodney Jackson rallies support last Saturday to keep the Pennsylvania-based Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament from selling their 2,265-acre Belmead property in Powhatan County. The SBS once operated two Catholic boarding schools for African-American students on the site. Mr. Jackson stands in front of the Belmead mansion, the former home of St. Emma Military Academy for Boys. The other school was St. Francis de Sales School for Girls. About 200 people attended the rally, but the prospects are regarded as slim that the SBS leadership will change course. Already, the SBS essentially has dissolved the nonprofit FrancisEmma Inc. that managed the property for the Catholic order of nuns for the past 12 years.

Splashing into the season/ Evan Mayfield, 10, whipped down the water slide Saturday at the 3rd Annual Cookout for a Cause at Westover Hills Elementary School in South Side. The free event, sponsored by Feed the Streets RVA, featured games, arts and crafts, bounce houses, food, music and other activities and vendors for youngsters and families to enjoy. Organizers asked only that each person bring a nonperishable food item to support FeedMore, Central Virginia’s hunger relief organization. Two signs depict the old and the new when it comes to the name of this North Side street whose residents include U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine and his wife, Anne B. Holton. The aging street sign still reads Con- federate Avenue, while the sign in the next picture, in the median, displays the new name City Council officially approved last month for the street — Laburnum Park Boulevard.
