The Captains Comedy Hour

Fifth Street Baptist Church on North Side is presenting a comedy show this weekend as part of its 20th anniversary celebration for its pastor, the Rev. F. Todd Gray, the church has announced.

“The Captain’s Comedy Hour” is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, April 11, at the Grace Center at 1302 Victor St. The center is adjacent to the church at 2800 Third Ave.

Comedians scheduled to perform include Marcus D. Wiley, who is known as “Bishop Secular” on the nationally syndicated Yolanda Adams Morning Show that is broadcast by radio in Richmond 6 to 10 a.m. weekdays on Praise 104.7 FM.

Virginia comedian Alex Scott of Culpeper also is scheduled to perform.

Fifth Street Baptist member Craig Watson will host the show. He is creative producer of Lyric Ave, a poetry-based variety show in Richmond.

Tickets are $20 in advance and available at www.5street.org or at Mama J’s restaurant (cash only), 415 N. 1st St.

Other 20th anniversary events at the Grace Center include a free Family Fun Night 6 p.m. Friday, April 10, and a Clergy Luncheon 1 p.m. Saturday, April 11, with Dr. John Kinney of Beaverdam Baptist Church as speaker, tickets are $20.

Additionally, a semiformal Captain’s Ball Sail-a-Bration Dinner will be held 5 p.m. Saturday, April 18, with the Rev. A. Lincoln James of Trinity Baptist Church on North Side, as speaker. Tickets are $40.

The weeklong celebration will conclude with the Rev. J. Troy Gray and the choir of Zion Baptist Church of Chillicothe, Ohio, leading the 10 a.m. worship service Sunday, April 19, at the church at 2800 Third Ave.
