Marching to beat the bans-Hundreds of women and their advocates, including Kristin Rodriguez, 40, took to the streets last Saturday for the Bans Off Our Bodies RVA rally and march to show their support for a woman’s right to make her own decisions when it comes to abortion. The Richmond rally was one of scores held across the country last weekend in advance of the U.S. Supreme Court’s new session that began Monday in which a case challenging abortion rights will be heard. That case, out of Mississippi, is expected to be argued Dec. 1, and has the potential to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 case that guaranteed women the constitutional protection of being able to choose to have an abortion without excessive government restriction. Texas recently passed a law that also would ban abortion after six weeks, a timeframe when many women don’t know whether they are pregnant. In Richmond, speakers urged people to work to protect women’s reproductive freedom. The rally was held at Diversity Richmond, followed by a march down Sherwood Avenue to Hermitage Road. Ida Allen, who led chants with the bullhorn during the march, was a lead coordinator of the event.

Marching to beat the bans-Hundreds of women and their advocates, including Kristin Rodriguez, 40, took to the streets last Saturday for the Bans Off Our Bodies RVA rally and march to show their support for a woman’s right to make her own decisions when it comes to abortion. The Richmond rally was one of scores held across the country last weekend in advance of the U.S. Supreme Court’s new session that began Monday in which a case challenging abortion rights will be heard. Radio personality “Miss Community” Clovia Lawrence of Urban One gets a big surprise last Saturday when Gov. Ralph S. Northam, center, and Lt. Gov. Justin E. Fairfax, left, show up during her 17th Annual Toy Drive outside the Walmart store on Sheila Lane in South Side and present her with proclamations honoring her 30 years of community work. The surprise presentation was organized by Christopher J. Woody of the Woody Foundation. Ms. Lawrence started the toy drive in 2004 to assist working families who couldn’t afford gifts for their children during the holiday season. Since then, more than 60,000 donated toys have been given to Richmond area families. Even as she was being honored, Ms. Lawrence was busy encouraging shoppers to purchase and donate toys for youngsters in need.

The James River Association broke ground on the James A. Buzzard River Education Center Monday, May 8, at 2825 Dock St. along the James River. Attending the ceremonial groundbreaking was Virginia Secretary of Natural and Historic Resources Travis Voyles, left, James River Association President and CEO Bill Street, Mayor Levar M. Stoney and Richmond City Councilwoman Cynthia I. Newbille. The state-of-the-art facility will serve as a catalyst for river education, environmental awareness and community connection, said Mr. Street. However, there was no mention of the James River’s Indigenous name, Powhatan, nor the Native Americans, the Powhatan tribe, who lived below the Fall Line (Richmond) when the Jamestown colonists arrived in 1607. The Powhatan River then was named the James River after King James I of England. Mayor Stoney, in his remarks, did note the James River’s “instrumental role” in Virgina’s history. “We know a number of great stories about how the river brought Abraham Lincoln down here, but also we know the story it played in the slave trade here as well. The good, the bad and the ugly. It’s my hope that every child in this city learns about the river and has a healthy respect for the river and the power of this natural resource that we have right in our backyard.”

She has been working as a nurse for 11 years. She says she doesn’t know which hospital she will be assigned to from day to day, but she has no doubt that she is needed. Most of her patients, she says, tested positive for COVID-19. Her silver lining? “Due to the somber reality that we may not always have our loved ones around, I find myself more intentional with calling them and letting them know how much I love them or just asking how they are doing.”

The pandemic has allowed him to spend time with his family. That has been a silver lining, he says. “My family and I were very busy people before this pandemic. Now, I get to spend quality time with them that I was not able to do during a regular day. Another silver lining for me is my appreciation for the variety of activities I was able to participate in this year like Senior Day, indoor track and spending time with my friends. I’m looking forward to going to college and embarking on new challenges.”

Antoinette Rogers is staying put at her North Side home with her 161⁄2-year-old Maltese mix dog, Toby. She takes him out for walks and fresh air. The adjunct education professor at the University of Richmond teaches one weekly online class now from the comfort of home. “I know I thrive in a face-to-face setting,” she said, while admitting that online teaching “takes a little more effort.” The pandemic, she said, has brought a pause to most everyone’s life. The silver lining? “I think God gave us some time to step back, assess some things and take stock of our lives.”
