Reginald “Bubba” Williams III, and his sister, Denise Williams, have shared a home in Henrico County for the past six years. “We do well together, but we are both missing our activity,” Ms. Williams said. “I am totally missing getting out.” But she knows staying in will help stop the transmission of the coronavirus, protecting her, her brother and others. Brother’s and sister’s keepers: Nearly two dozen people attend the “I Am My Brother’s and Sister’s Keeper” Day program last Friday at the Reconciliation Statue at 15th and Main streets by Shockoe Bottom. Organized by Richmond Delegate Delores L. McQuinn, the event sought healing, cooperation, love, peace and an end to violence and racism in the community. Political, community and faith leaders attended the event, including Delegate Eileen Filler-Corn of Fairfax County. At the corner of Hammond and Brook Road in Richmond’s Edgehill neighborhood, Gary Flowers, left, pulls the signage cover strings Monday, as his sister, Jan Flowers, stands with him. Along with other family, friends and neighbors, the son and daughter of Stafford Alvin Flowers and Ella Lee Fountain Flowers unveil the honorary street sign, Flowers Way, that honors their father and mother. Stafford Alvin Flowers, who died in 2011, was a brick mason and owner of a contracting business. He also was a co-founder of the Metropolitan Business League, and a regional director for the National Business League, which evolved from the Negro Business League founded by Booker T. Washington in 1900. Ella Lee Fountain Flowers, a former Virginia Union University and Richmond Public Schools educator, died May 15, 2022. Mrs. Flowers was an 80-year member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and a lifelong member of the NAACP, serving as the secretary for the Richmond Chapter. The street dedication was initiated by 3rd District North Side City Council woman Ann-Frances Lambert, who wants the history of Black Northside Richmond locked in for all to know. She reminded people that a large percentage of Black Americans, when researching their genealogy, realize they have a connection to Richmond.

Happy Birthday, Mrs. Walker! Richmond area residents took time recently to remember pioneering Richmond businesswoman Maggie L. Walker in honor of what would have been her 157th birthday on July 15. While she is best known as the first Black woman to found and serve as president of a bank in the United States, she also was a civil rights and voting rights advocate, newspaper publisher, store owner and politician and all around community leader. About 30 local volunteers, including sisters Keishawna Rowe, 22, left, and Vonjanique Brown, 25, below center, used their Saturday morning on July 17 to give back by volunteering to spruce up Jackson Ward by removing litter from the sidewalks and the street. The service effort was a collaboration coordinated by the City of Richmond’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community facilities.

John Burnley of Richmond, below, wears a photo of his late daughter, Juanita Burnley, during the Coalition Against Violence’s 29th Annual Holiday Memorial Service to remember those who lost their lives to violence in the city. Relatives, friends and supporters mourning lost loved ones who were victims of violence at- tended the Dec. 12 ceremony held in the lobby of Richmond City Hall. Participants wrote the names of their loved ones on red ribbons that were placed around the statue, “River of Tears,” that stands situated in City Hall. Mr. Burnley’s daughter was murdered by her boyfriend in No- vember 2007, and he has annually attended the memorial started by Linda Jordan to help family members with their grief and loss through the holidays.

Japan ‘Sister City’ recognition: Richmond Mayor Levar M. Stoney greets several students from Saitama, Japan, last week during their visit to City Council chambers to recognize the 20th anniversary of Saitama’s partnership with Richmond in the Sister City program. The high school students and two teachers from Urawa Municipal High School spent a week in the Richmond area through the scholastic exchange program. City officials and representatives of five overseas cities join Monday in unveiling Richmond’s new International Guidepost at Kanawha Plaza amid a downpour. The new sign celebrates Richmond’s Sister City relationship with Richmond upon Thames, England; Saitama City, Japan; Ségou, Republic of Mali; Windhoek, Namibia; and Zhengzhou, China. Saitama’s representatives included members of the Japanese city’s Little League baseball team. Richmond began a relationship with its English namesake in 1930 and began forging bonds with additional cities in 1980 after forming the 13-member Sister Cities Commission.
