Dr. Harvey greets singer Lionel Richie at Hampton University. While the date of this photo is uncertain, Mr. Richie flew to campus from Los Angeles at his own expense, he said at the time, to emcee Hampton University’s 125th anniversary celebration on April 1, 1993. He told a local newspaper that he and Dr. Harvey had a long-standing friendship dating back to their days at Tuskegee Institute when Mr. Richie was a student and Dr. Harvey was an administrator.

About 40 people attended Palm Sunday services in person at Westwood Baptist Church earlier this week. Many others joined via the internet. It was just the second week the historic 147-year-old church has held in-person services since December 2021. Richmond’s oldest fire station has a date with a wrecking ball after 114 years. This is Fire Station No. 12, which opened at 2223 W. Cary St. in 1908 when horses pulled the equipment to fires. Plans for replacing this historic station with a new building at the site began in earnest last year. The city has invested in design and is now reviewing construction bids that were received by the Tuesday deadline. Year-old Deilani Bland-Murph holds on to the hands of her mother, Tyshell Bland, right, and that of a Richmond SPCA volunteer at last Saturday’s 20th Annual Dog Jog and 5k to benefit the pets in the care of the local SPCA. People and their pets came from all over the region to participate in the event held at the SPCA, 2519 Hermitage Road near The Diamond. The day was packed with games and activities for people of all ages. Deilani’s mom and the volunteer helped her on the “Little Paws” Fund Run for the youngest of all. The day kicked off with a 5K run/walk for people, followed by a leisurely mile-long Dog Jog for people and their dogs.

City Hall is bathed in the blue and yellow of the Ukrainian flag, a nightly display of solidarity with the beleaguered Eastern European nation that is struggling to repel the destructive invasion of the Russian army. The invasion began Feb. 24, the day after Defender of the Fatherland Day in Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin wants Ukraine to again be a vassal state of Moscow, as it was when the Soviet Union was in existence. The inva- sion is the largest since World War II. Still, the bi-color flag continues to fly as Ukraine resists. The flag has been the symbol of Ukraine since the 12th century when it was part of the Kingdom of Galicia- Volhynia. Banned during Soviet rule after World War I, the flag was restored after Ukraine regained its independence in 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Harmony McKenzie, 4, makes her presence known as she attends the March to Fund Safe Schools last Saturday with her grandmother, Katina Harris, president of the Richmond Education Association. About 100 people walked from William Fox Elementary School on Hanover Avenue in The Fan to Monroe Park calling for funding to upgrade or replace Virginia’s aging schools. Before the march, Ms. Harris paused to support a bake sale benefiting the Fox School community in the wake of the Feb. 11 fire that destroyed the building. The school opened in 1911. Many of those attending the march called for a new George Wythe High School to replace the decaying school building in South Side that opened in 1960. Harmony attends the pre-school at Mary Scott School in North Side.
