A new historic marker honoring Richmond business and civil rights leader Maggie L. Walker sits in front of the historic St. Luke Building that has stood in the 900 block of St. James Street in Gilpin Court since 1903. Now a 12-unit apartment building with first-floor commercial space, the building began life as the national headquarters of the United Order of St. Luke, a Black fraternal and insurance group led by Mrs. Walker from 1899 until her death in 1934. Making bold moves, she pushed the fraternal order into developing the headquarters and taking other entrepreneurial action, including opening a bank.

A new historic marker honoring Richmond business and civil rights leader Maggie L. Walker sits in front of the historic St. Luke Building that has stood in the 900 block of St. James Street in Gilpin Court since 1903. For her father / Gianna Floyd, the 7-year-old daughter of the late George Floyd, takes an ice cream break during the Floyd family’s meeting at the White House with President Biden and Vice President Harris on Tuesday, the first anniversary of her father’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police. According to reports, the youngster told the president she was hungry and asked if he had any snacks. He responded by providing ice cream, Cheetos and chocolate milk. While the meeting may have proved a little much for the youngster, family members left optimistic about prospects for Senate passage of a police reform package named for George Floyd.

Cityscape-City Hall has not been able to remove this stone highway marker noting that a stretch of U.S. 1 in South Side, now known as Richmond Highway, was once called Jefferson Davis Highway to honor the traitorous Confederate president. Location: A grassy strip in front of the city Department of Public Utilities’ Field Operations and Maintenance Facility at Maury Street and Richmond Highway. A Richmond chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy placed the 4-foot-tall marker on the site in 1935. City Council voted last December to change the name of the roadway. Robert Steidel, the city’s chief operating officer, stated Tuesday that this is one of a series of markers placed by the UDC along U.S. 1 in the city and other locations. He said all are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which complicates their removal. He stated that city staff is working with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources to come up with a plan to remove the marker. The plan will be presented first to the City Planning Commission. Meanwhile, the Virginia General Assembly, which nearly 100 years ago designated U.S. 1 as Jefferson Davis Highway, this year approved replacing the Davis name with Emancipation Highway as of Jan. 1, 2022, in localities such as Chesterfield County that have not renamed the roadway.

Remembering her brother-Princess Blanding hosts a community remembrance of her brother, Marcus-David Peters, last Saturday on the third anniversary of his death. Mr. Peters, a 24-year-old Virginia Commonwealth University honors graduate and biology teacher, was shot and killed May 14, 2018, by a Richmond Police officer as he was experiencing what some have described as a mental health crisis just off Interstate 95. Ms. Blanding held the anniversary gathering on Monument Avenue, near the Lee monument circle that some renamed Marcus-David Peters Circle. She and other family and friends honored Mr. Peters’ life and called for a federal investigation into his death. Ms. Blanding is running as a Liberation Party candidate for governor.

No appointments are needed for the health districts’ clinics. The school at 4314 Crutchfield St. in South Richmond will be among several sites offering inoculations during the coming days. The next vaccine clinics at George Wythe will be noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, and 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 19. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine will be available, along with the two- dose Pfizer vaccine.

The building on the northeast corner of Cary and Belvidere streets is now home to a place “where the future will be invented,” according to Dr. Michael Rao, president of Virginia Commonwealth University. That place is VCU’s new four-story Engineering Research Building, which formally opened Feb. 3 in a virtual ribbon-cutting ceremony. Begun in 2018, the $93 million facility expands laboratory space for advanced research and includes fully equipped space for students to test ideas and create prototypes. Officials said that, among other things, the center enables students from art, business and other disciplines to come together with engineering students and faculty to investigate real-world problems, invent solutions, build companies and impact the world beyond the campus.

Tamra Collins and her 6-year-old son, Isaiah, happily sled down a hill at Shrader Road and Eunice Drive last Sunday in Henrico County. When 3 inches of snow hit the metro area last weekend, people took to the outdoors to enjoy the wintry landscape. People were sledding, had snowball fights and built snowmen. While this was Metro Richmond’s first big snowfall of the winter season, the area escaped the 1 to 3 feet of snow the same storm dropped on the Northeast. Much of the snow has melted already, with more wet weather on the way. Rain is expected Friday, Feb. 5, with the possibility of rain and/or snow showers on Sunday, Feb. 7. Nightly temperatures are forecast to remain at or below freezing through next week.
