Baugh of Portsmouth after the con- gressman was made an honorary Tuskegee Airman during a ceremony last Saturday by the Howard Baugh Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen Inc. in Petersburg. Mr. Baugh is the oldest son of the late Lt. Col. Howard Baugh of Petersburg who was one of the famed airmen of the 99th Pursuit Squadron and the 332nd Fighter Group that escorted bombers on combat missions over Europe during World War II. Lt. Col. Baugh was honored during his lifetime with numerous commendations, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and the U.S. Air Force Commendation Medal, along with the French Legion of Honor Award bestowed by the French government. The ceremony was held at the Richmond Executive Airport in Chesterfield County. The Petersburg group is one of 56 Tuskegee Airmen chapters in the United States dedicated to honoring the accomplishments and preserving the legacy of the airmen who trained at the Tuskegee Army Air Field in Alabama.

More than 1,700 sorority members from across Virginia attended the luncheon to hear Dr. Boyd, a former national president of the sorority from 2000 to 2004. Known as the sorority’s “technology presi- dent,” she helped launch Project SEE, Science in Everyday Experiences, an initiative funded by a $1.6 million National Science Foundation grant to promote math and science for African-American middle school girls. The event was hosted by the sorority’s Chesterfield Alumnae Chapter. The sorority was ounded Jan. 13, 1913, by 22 women at Howard University.

More than 2,000 people erupt into cheers at the coming of 2020 at the Science Museum of Virginia’s Noon Year’s Eve celebration. At the stroke of noon on Dec. 31, confetti dropped from the top of the rotunda as youngsters and their families celebrated New Year’s early on Tuesday.
