Ayla Hyndman, 6 months, is giving Soul Santa a close examination as if to determine if she can tell him all of her Christmas wishes. This is the first Christmas for Ayla, who visited Soul Santa, aka Floyd Brown, recently with her parents at the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia. Soul Santa has become an annual tradition at the museum in Jackson Ward.

A “Now Leasing” sign adorns an entry to the Church Hill North development on North 31st Street off Nine Mile Road in the city’s East End. While no announce- ment has been made, the sign signals that the yearlong construction on the first phase of new apartments is coming to a close. The development was undertaken by The Community Builders of Boston in partner- ship with the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority. The site is the former home of Armstrong High School, which was torn down to make way for the new residences. The first phase was announced on Oct. 30, 2018, when work began to include 60 family units and 45 apartments for seniors at a cost of about $26 million. Work on another 70 units was begun earlier this year, and those units are in various stages of completion. The total development is to include 256 units, including a few single-family homes. The project is the first step in the overhaul of the nearby Creighton Court public housing community. Some Creighton Court residents are to be moved to Church Hill North as planning for renovation or replacement of the 504-unit Creighton Court complex continues.

John Burnley of Richmond, below, wears a photo of his late daughter, Juanita Burnley, during the Coalition Against Violence’s 29th Annual Holiday Memorial Service to remember those who lost their lives to violence in the city. Relatives, friends and supporters mourning lost loved ones who were victims of violence at- tended the Dec. 12 ceremony held in the lobby of Richmond City Hall. Participants wrote the names of their loved ones on red ribbons that were placed around the statue, “River of Tears,” that stands situated in City Hall. Mr. Burnley’s daughter was murdered by her boyfriend in No- vember 2007, and he has annually attended the memorial started by Linda Jordan to help family members with their grief and loss through the holidays.

Jessica Brisco stands to be recognized as the top fall graduate at Virginia State University dur- ing fall commencement exercises last Saturday at the university’s Multi-Purpose Center. Delegate Delores L. It asks Virginians to perform a random act of kindness on the Friday after the holiday. On this second annual “I Am My Brother and Sister’s Keeper Day,” Delegate McQuinn challenged people to have seven others join in doing something kind to make a difference in the lives of others. With 154 apartment units in Jackson Ward in various stages of completion after 16 months of construction, residents in the Richmond Re-development and Housing Authority’s nearby Fay Towers in Gilpin Court are being prepped to move in during the coming weeks. At least 72 units in new $33 million complex bounded by 1st, 2nd, Jackson and Duval streets are earmarked for Fay Towers residents. The remaining 82 units in the complex are to be rented to anyone interested. Replacement of Fay Towers, a 200-unit high rise located at 1202 N. 1st St., began in 2016 when 77 households were moved into a renovated school building in Highland Park. The final phase, redevelopment of the former Baker Elementary School into 51 apartments, is still on hold. The Community Preservation and Development Corp., which is undertaking the Fay Towers replacement in partnership with the RRHA, began advertising for subcontractors for the Baker School project in September, but has not moved forward.

In 2018 in Virginia, 278 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes and more than 4,400 people were injured, according to MADD. Fatalities were up 12 percent over 2017, according to the organization’s data. Victims’ names were read as candles were lighted Monday night. Booklovers who want to share their love of reading have placed a Little Free Library in their yard in the 1600 block of Laburnum Avenue in North Side. The national nonprofit Little Free Library program is a free book exchange that encourages people to come and pick a book to read and leave one for others to take for free. The mission is to build a sense of community along with a love of reading by providing free book access to all. The Little Free Library idea was started in 2009 in Wisconsin and has grown across the nation and the globe. Today, there are 90,000 registered mini-libraries in all 50 states and more than 90 countries, including dozens within Metro Richmond. For a map of locations, go to www.littlefreelibrary.org.

Cityscape: Slices of life and scenes in Richmond-Artist Austin Miles of Petersburg puts the finishing touches last week on this new mural that now decorates Max Market, 1125 Hull St. She is contributing the fine details to the mural that began with a community paint day Oct. 5. The mural is the first of a planned series titled “Brown Girl Narratives” that Kristal Brown, founder and leader of Black Women Cache LLC, is spearheading. This and other murals will help fulfill the goal of the organization, Ms. Brown said, which is “to highlight the lived experiences of black women through media and visual arts.” Next year, the Virginia Commonwealth University doctoral student plans to release a coffee table book focusing on black women and hold other events.
