This sleek, 20-story glass tower rises 413 feet into the sky in the block bounded by Cary, Canal, 6th and 7th streets in Downtown. When completed, this latest addition to the city’s skyline, now dubbed Canal Place, will house employees of Dominion Energy. The building has been two years and more than $250 million in the making and is the first of two towers the company plans to construct. O’Rourke campaigns in Henrico: Democratic presidential hopeful Beto O’Rourke stumps for support in Henrico County on Tuesday night, one of several stops in the state. The former Texas congressman talked up his values and his policy views in making his initial foray into Virginia. Mr. O’Rourke drew an enthusiastic crowd of more than 800 people to the event sponsored by the Henrico County Democratic Committee at a hotel in Short Pump. He is running in a crowded field of Democrats seeking the party’s nomination. Other contenders are expected to hit Virginia in the coming weeks and months. Former Virginia Gov. Reynolds inaugurates new president: Dr. Paula P. Pando is all smiles after her inauguration last Friday as J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College’s fourth president. The ceremony, held at the Dewey Gottwald Center at the Science Museum of Virginia, carried the theme “Equity Through Action.” Dr. Pando, who immigrated with her family to the United States from Chile when she was young, was the first in her family to earn a college degree. She has worked in higher education for more than 20 years, beginning as director of campus activities and programs at Saint Peter’s University in Jersey City, N.J. She later joined Hudson County Community College in Jersey City and rose through the ranks, holding three different vice president positions. She was senior vice president for student and educational services there when she was chosen from among 102 applicants in a national search to lead J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. Japan ‘Sister City’ recognition: Richmond Mayor Levar M. Stoney greets several students from Saitama, Japan, last week during their visit to City Council chambers to recognize the 20th anniversary of Saitama’s partnership with Richmond in the Sister City program. The high school students and two teachers from Urawa Municipal High School spent a week in the Richmond area through the scholastic exchange program. The students visited the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and Maymont, where there was a welcome ceremony in the Japanese Gardens. Courthouse renaming: The courthouse in Charles City County has a new name. On Feb. 17, it was renamed the Iona Whitehead Adkins Courthouse in honor of the county’s late circuit court clerk. In 1967, Mrs. Adkins was the first African-American elected to a court of record in the United States since Reconstruction. Mrs. Adkins served as the court clerk for 21 years until her retirement in 1988. She also was active with the local NAACP branch, the Charles City Civic League and St. John Baptist Church in Charles City until her death in October 2004. An array of elected officials attended the ceremony, including former Gov. Terry McAuliffe and Congressman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott. A plaque with Mrs. Adkins’ photo hangs in the courthouse foyer.
