History tolls: A piece of history sits in front of Thirty-first Street Baptist Church in the East End. It’s the original bell from the church tower that was placed between 1915 and 1917, according to accounts from the church website. Courthouse renaming: The courthouse in Charles City County has a new name. On Feb. 17, it was renamed the Iona Whitehead Adkins Courthouse in honor of the county’s late circuit court clerk. In 1967, Mrs. Adkins, shown in a photo held by her granddaughter Kaci Easley, was the first African-American elected to a court of record in the United States since Reconstruction. Mrs. Adkins served as the court clerk for 21 years until her retirement in 1988. She also was active with the local NAACP branch, the Charles City Civic League and St. John Baptist Church in Charles City until her death in October 2004. An array of elected officials attended the ceremony, including former Gov. Terry McAuliffe and Congressman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott. A plaque with Mrs. Adkins’ photo hangs in the courthouse foyer. Whoa, Aslan!-Tori Branard makes a final adjustment to Aslan’s bridle at the Feb. 7 badging ceremony inducting the horse into the Richmond Police Department’s Mounted Unit. As a student at Asbury University’s unique Service Mounts Program in Kentucky, Ms. Branard spent three years training Aslan, a Percheron-thoroughbred cross. Watching is Aslan’s amused partner, Master Patrol Officer Amanda Acuff. Aslan is the fourth horse in the unit and is a replacement for Rio, who was retired in December. The others are Samson, Scooter and Toby. The horses live in a condemned stable near Gilpin Court. The police department is seeking other sources of funding for a new facility after recent bids to replace the current stable came in $1 million over budget. (Clement Britt)

It’s a family affair: When the string didn’t work on Sunday to unveil the honorary North Side street sign for the late Clarence L. Townes Jr., Townes family members and friends lifted Mr. Townes’ great-grandson, 8-year-old Ryland Willis, to remove the sign’s covering. A crowd turned out for the honor to the late Richmond business and civic leader who also was chairman of the Richmond School Board for four years. He died in January 2017.
